In 2014, Arkil Asphalt completed a special surfacing project in front of the National Gallery of Denmark, which recently built a new museum garden. Arkil was contracted to surface the 741 m2 oval pool in the garden with the specially designed Densiphalt.
The surfacing is typically used in heavily trafficked areas such as airports, train stations and in warehouses. At the National Gallery of Denmark, however, the special surfacing was chosen due to its appearance.
The surface is ground smooth like terrazzo so that the granite chippings become visible and create a reflection in the water surface. Arkil's asphalt laboratories produced countless test tiles with several types of chippings, milling grades and colours based on the architect's specifications until the right surface was found.
